WPSDLocal6.com is reporting on a three vehicle car and truck wreck that occurred Tuesday morning on I-57 at Mile Post 47 in the northbound lane. The accident was outside Marion.
Authorities with the Illinois State Police state that the accident happened when Willie Lee Shelby, 62, of Mason, Mississippi, driving a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer, failed to stop in time to avoid hitting the rear of Wayne Maxwell’s van. The resulting collision drove the van into a 2010 Kenworth tractor-trailer, thereby killing Maxwell.
Troopers say Shelby was received by a local hospital for minor injuries. Maxwell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shelby was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Further charges may be forthcoming, Troopers say, pending a complete investigation.
