CBS Local is reporting from Chicago on a fatal accident that occurred in Batavia at 4:50 AM on Friday morning. The fatality happened as a good samaritan tried to assist with a broken down vehicle. The man has been identified as 48 year old Nicholas Ortiz. He was a resident of Montgomery, Illinois.
Although the news article does not mention the road on which the accident happened, another news report from Batavia mentions the 500 block of North Randall Road.
The accident investigation is still ongoing, however, it appears that the matter began when one vehicle pulled over the the side of the road, apparently disabled.
At this point, two people near the scene decided to come to the aid of he disabled vehicle which was still partially in the roadway. A passing Oberwells Dairy struck the disabled vehicle, resulting in Ortiz being killed and two others hurt. A total of four vehicles were eventually involved in the accident scene.
Authorities say the accident happened on the downslope of a hill, in an area with few street lights.
No charges or citations have yet been forthcoming.
The accident remains under investigation.
