According to CBSLocal.com, Chicago resident Jose Zamago-Gaugin, 27, has been charged with a variety of counts in the case of a car accident police say he is responsible for. Chief among those charges is reckless homicide, for the death of Mayra Rivera, whom Berwyn police say he killed when his vehicle slammed into hers at over 80 MPH. Zamago-Gaugin’s blood alcohol level was said to be twice the legal limit.
According to authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM on Tuesday morning on Ogden Avenue bear Ridgeland Avenue in west suburban Berwyn. They say he veered over the double yellow center line, impacting the vehicle of Rivera’s in a horrific head-on crash. The 25 year old single mom from Plainfield leaves behind a six year old son.
Injured also was Zamago-Gaugin himself as well as his female passenger. Police say the passenger tried warning others of Zamago-Gaugin’s speeding by way of text messaging, but that he responded by restraining her, grabbing her phone and then throwing it away.
Zamago-Gaugin faces two counts of aggravated DUI, one count of reckless homicide, and one count of unlawful restraint. Police also issued several traffic citations.
