Reporting from Otto Township, the Daily Journal of Kankaee states that Herscher resident Laverne R. Schulz, 85, died Sunday as the result of his pickup being rammed by a semi-truck. Another news source states that Schulz was a woman; we will correct this post whenever that information becomes definite.
The accident happened on Leigh Road at Illinois Route 115 in Otto Township.The time was about 10:01 AM.
Authorities with the Illinois State Police state that Sioux City resident Gerbretsadik T. Hagdu, 37, failed to yield the right of way at the intersection involved in the crash. As they relate, Schultz was proceeding east on Route 115 in his pickup approaching Lehigh Road while Hagdu was traveling northbound on Lehigh approaching Route 115. The ISP says in a preliminary report that it appears the semi failed obey the stop sign, smashing into the pickup.
Schultz was received by Loyola Medical Center in Maywood by Riverside Medical Center.
Hagdu was issued a ticket for failing to yield at an intersection. It is unknown if he suffered any injuries.
